Speaking and Listening Ideas

Speaking and Listening Ideas

1. Freeze Frame a moment from a diary entry. Hot-seat, Thought-Track, Newspaper Headline and Commentator.

To be done with a text the children are very familiar with (perhaps at the end of the week?).

2. Information Gap resources sheet: several different diary entries.
- Each group has 3 copies of a sheet with one completed diary entry and 3 missing parts.
- Encourage them to divide the tasks amounts them (you find missing gaps for Bill's diary entry, you find missing parts for Josephine's diary, you find missing parts for Pete's diary)
- Then they must fill in the other 3 entries in 5 minutes.
- Questions phrased in second and first person:
'What altitude did you reach on Day 1?'
' managed to climb to 3,456m'.
- Collect, guillotine, stick together and compare with originals on the working wall.
3. Reading a poem about climbing together (You must climb a mountain with me).

4. Word Tennis. Begin with the line, Everest, 3rd July 2011. It's snowing heavily today…
- In groups of 6 or 7 they continue a diary entry for 1/ 2 minutes. CT types the diary entry as they go / chn must scribe the diary entry as they go.
- Need to be very familiar with texts before and have ideas for what to speak about, or alternatively have a frame (e.g. talk about food).
